Reading Blog #1: Glitch Art Manifesto

The reading, Glitch Art Manifesto by Rosa Menkman, delved into a new world/genre of art I was not aware of. I have seen many examples of glitch art, but viewed it more as an effect, less of a category of art - or even movement. Menkman goes into the aesthetic of an error or different kinds of errors made in technology and media, used for artistic advantage. It breaks the norms of conventional art that has a “smooth” feel, and appreciates the mistakes and flaws that can be made to create a different feel to art. I really like this idea because I use that thinking in my own art, I resonate with abstract creations. And many times I make mistakes or create features I did not plan on, but instead of trying to fix it, I go with it. Giving each of my pieces a unique feel and individual perspective. Menkman also mentioned the ephemeral and temporal nature of glitches. With its ability to be temporary or inconsistent, and only enjoyed for the time frame it can perform. Enjoying this break from reality makes it that much more interesting and encapsulating. It is creating a visual out of usual digital technology tools and learning to tweak/hack them in a way that is unpredictable and unexpected. She also talks about the proper functions of technology. It is designed to do its job in a specific way, in the way it is programmed. But when you break those boundaries and pass those limits, something can flourish. She explains the liking she takes in the idea of pushing those lines and exploring the hidden functions you can find with technology that are not meant to be used.
