Final Projection Video Link + Final Artist Statement

Updated: Dec 12, 2024

For this project I decided to experiment with the imagery of gender, through my styrofoam mannequin heads. I had the idea to project onto some form of body from the beginning and when I found a male, female, and no faced styrofoam head, I knew what I wanted to do. In my installation, I put the female head first in the vertical line on the wall. This was supposed to symbolize that the woman is the beginning of all life. I believe in mother nature and the fact that the woman creates and protects all forms of life. Then I put the faceless head below the female to show the middle ground between gender, there are a lot of identities that hold just as much value in our world. And of course, the male was at the bottom. I think that is very self explanatory. Since the election, I have felt a more intense burden towards men and their privilege and behavior. I can almost sound a bit extremist when I get started on these thoughts, but I wanted to approach this feeling in a more nonchalant way for this project. This is my first art show having an actual exhibit open to the public, and I planned on taking a more aggressive and political stance for it. But I decided to focus more on showing off my animation style and lean more on my trippy side. I used Ai to generate and customize the faces I projected onto the heads and then used motion animation to warp them in a loop to add some life. Then I took my favorite animation off of YouTube to project in the background. The space with just the heads was not as intriguing as I had planned, so I brought in some styrofoam semi circles of all sizes. I filled in the empty spaces to really embrace the 3D nature of this project. I liked the idea of creating planet-like circular worlds with these semicircles, so I projected different moving black and white patterns to contrast with the colorful background. My favorite aspect of the circles was the one I turned inside out and projected static just on the inner circle. I enjoyed this projection project and hope to utilize the skills and programs I learned in my future with animation.
