This reading was very interesting to me. It begins by discussing the meaning of “Bain d’images”, which influences society's perception and actions through things like the internet and advertising. Visual literacy is a way to communicate certain media and information effectively, which is said to be crucial for learning. However, I’m not sure if I agree with her point that even though youth is constantly exposed to this type of literacy, we lack the ability to correctly interpret it. I think our generation has grown up on visual literacy and learning to break it down. We are the first generation to be so exposed to so many types of media that are constantly advancing, therefore I believe we are the most efficient in this area of communication. We grew up learning to study advertisements and visuals. It goes into the variety of ways to use Visual Literacy, and the many aspects that go into categorizing this type of media. The author notes that living in the 21st century requires one to have social media and technological skills in relation to problem-solving and creativity skills. I agree with this because it is hard to keep up with all of the constant updates in this day and age, and it can be easy to fall behind if you do not challenge yourself to advance. I think it can be said that the youth needs to practice critical thinking when it comes to visual literacy. She ends the reading by saying Ausburn’s list of benefits to developing Visual Literacy is…improved verbal skills, self expression, and variety of ideas. I love this encouragement of communicating through images and how universal it can be for our community.
